Devoting oneself to music leads inevitably to a constant research for a balance among technical ability, musical culture, and human values, since probably only if founded on these three pillars music can reach its full expression.
The Guido Alberto Fano International Master Classes for Music, in Spilimbergo, a charming medieval centre in north east Italy, are a perfect example of how it is still possible to maintain such a commitment.
Teachers of the highest level (coming from Italy’s principal Orchestras as well as worldwide) share their knowledge and experiences with a hundred an fifty students (coming from music academies as well as from music bands), in order to make their music potential blossom and their technique reach perfection, always without losing touch with their human side.
Young musicians coming from almost every part of Italy and Europe can share their experiences, ideas, interests and concerns with other fellow students and colleagues.
In any aspect of the impeccable organisation (coming next summer to its 11th edition, it has reached a clockwork level) one touches with hand what cooperation, hard work for a common goal and enthusiasm that overcomes any possible problem really mean. Sharing meals all together students, teachers and staff, the accommodation in Villaggio La Favorita, a group of wooden bungalows right outside the town centre, daily transfers to and from Music school, are simple jet powerful moments that get immediately to young people, regardless of any possible background difference, and contribute to create the harmony so crucial in any orchestra or band.
There’s a chance for younger musicians to listen to senior colleagues and learn also by assisting to their classes; small music ensambles are created alongside with formal lessons, in which one can perform from classical to jazz and pop music, proving the power of amusement in learning, as well as that of hard work: days begin very early here and end long after nightfall, after orchestra rehearsals.
In fact, three Orchestras are formed every year now, depending on students’ level, and the Master Classes end with two Concerts, one in Spilimbergo itself and the other “on tour” in an hosting town.
All these ingredients lead to a really unforgettable Music Week, so concentrate that its effects are meant to last for a whole year at least.
In our globalized world, Spilimbergo’s Master Classes represent an example of generosity in sharing the pleasure of music making, knowing that through it we can even improve ourselves as human beings. This gathering of Art, Technique and Humanity can bring all of us (teachers, students, even public, as the one who writes) a very positive and effective boost of energy in order to face all the multiple challenges the world we live in presents.
